KISSS My B and Get on with It

I came downstairs 90 minutes ago and I am just now starting to write.  I guess I could blame my daughter for distracting me.  She came down stairs to see what mom was doing.  She actually asked if she could help me find a suitable bag for our scavenger hunt. (We interrupt this blog post to interject some mystery and shamelessly coax you into reading to the end. Just pretend you are watching the news as they break for commercial, "When we return breaking news on several Jesus sightings,")

I feel like I am getting too caught up in the details, which may be my way of putting off what is really important, MY MISSION.

Modern B*a*g Ladies is an inclusive sisterhood.  Our mission is to fuel each others Beliefs, so we are charged to take Action and Go to our dreams.
We will spread our new found joy, shred our own and others fears and just have more fun. We are real! We are not yes ladies! We are OH YES Ladies and it feels great!

So I've made a decision.  Which is that I will make a decision and GO!!! You know the "A" and "G" in the bag, realizing there's a false "B" (borrowed belief) which is hissing in my ear, "You can't do that. Blah, Blah and Blah."

I'm going to KISS my bought and borrowed beliefs and get on with it.  Keep it Simple Super Star!  I guess that's KISSS.  KISSS the HISS goodbye.  Yep I'm talking myself into it.  Embrace the process.  One small step for Kim. One giant step for KIM being KIND to herself.  Gosh you'd think I was trying to walk on the moon here.  Actually, sometimes it feels like it.

Here's some action words for all you Discover Your B*a*g OH Yes Ladies: Reading, Thinking, Talking.  All very nice verbs indeed.  Necessary?  YES. Enough?  NO. Reading will inspire you and get you thinking.  It may teach you a new skill.  I talk about wonderful books all the time.  I tell people my plans, but when it comes right down to it I need to blister my feet and callus my hands more.  This involves forcing myself into a corner and finding my way out. You must force change upon yourself.  You can't read and get it. Think it and get. Talk about it and get it.  You must want it bad enough that you are willing to lose going after it and then get back up again and fight some more.

So, today on my way to work I see a man walking.  I see more people walking these days.  One morning I saw a woman walking.  She was carrying a purse.  How many people carry their purse on a walk meant for exercise?  I turn the truck around. Approaching her I lower the window and ask if she needed a ride. No I'm just walking.  I kind of felt stupid.  I see her almost every day now and it makes me smile.  I honor anybody committed to more exercise.  Yet, for all I know she had her car repossessed and now she has to walk to work.  Either way she walks in a proud way.

A robe, long beard, sandals, walking stick, large rosary and a backpack.  "Should I stop?"  I lower my speed, holding up traffic behind me. My sister picked up a hitch hiker once.  Dad sternly schooled her in the dangers of picking up strangers. "I am on a major highway. What could happen?  There's too many witnesses."    I increase my speed.  "This is going to delay my arrival to work."  Blinker on, I make a quick U turn and head back toward "Jesus".

I approach and lower my window, "Is there anything I can do for you?"  I don't remember what he says.  He looks very normal except for his clothes.  "Are you on a pilgrimage?"  "Do you walk everywhere?"  He explains that yes indeed a pilgrimage.  The first in 7 years as he as been ill.  I offer him $10.  He can not accept money, only food, water and shelter.  He had his lunch for today and today only. He explained that he was part of some brotherhood order.  "Safe journey.  I will be praying for you."   He replied, "And I will pray for you as well."  I do another U turn and he continues to walk.  "Dang I could have offered him my orange I had packed for my lunch today."  I momentarily hear that hissing in my ear.

3 years ago I would not have stopped for either traveler. Sad, but true.  In a small way this is a step towards the blisters and the calluses.  Writing tonight did not come easy. It is a labor of love or an emotional labor I wrote about in my article on The Survivor Manual titled, Sister Subsets and Brother Brackets

I will continue to read, think and talk.  Apparently it's inspiring some worthy actions.  I must be kind to myself and travel ahead with faith and less fear.  Did you know the most quoted commandment in the bible is "do not fear?"  I shared a kind word and hope with a man that looked like Jesus today.  Knowing that he is praying for me brings me comfort.  I leave this post off to bed sending loving energy to him and a few others.  It is a worthy action.  Necessary?  YES!

Middle Pieces - Fundraiser Enchanted Makeovers

On May 16th I had the opportunity to speak at the St. Alphonsus Mother Daughter Sister Luncheon.  St. Alphonsus church is my childhood church.  When I presented at the ladies retreat a year ago, Rev. Joseph P. V.  Phung invited me to speak about the non-profit, Enchanted Makeovers, as a team member.  When I pulled up to the church on Sunday May 16th I recalled how I dreaded going to church as a youngster. What a contrast on that day. I was thrilled to pull up to the church with my mom.  I thank the women who represented God's love in action back when I was young.  They provided the framework for which I build upon today. The luncheon raised $600 for Enchanted Makeovers. I share a short story I wrote at the end of the photo montage.  Enjoy!

Follow the Signs.....

I don't know her real name. I know her as Delightfully Tacky. She had a dream. She had a dream to travel the country in a 1973 Winnebago Brave D-20T. "BRAVE". She planned. She saved. She searched. AND she realized her dream which starts a journey all over again. In my heart of hearts I want to be her or go with her on this leg of the trip. Her quest exemplifies the Modern B*a*g Ladies philosophy. She is a Traveling Sanctuary in a Brave Traveling Sanctuary.

I don't know her in person. I know her spirit. AND I love her for following her dream. Today I cheer out loud for her accomplishment.

My message for you today is.... Follow the Signs. They light up as you hover over them. Trust me they will take you places. WHAT'S YOUR BRAVE WINNEBAGO? GET A PICTURE OF IT POST IT ON YOUR BATHROOM MIRROR. GO FOR IT. DO IT FOR YOU. DO IT FOR THE SISTERHOOD.

Follow the link (sign), trust me you will see how passion and following your intuition will manifest into your dreams.

I Hope I Get Your Voicemail

Oh good, I am rounding the curve, out of the "dead zone". I was on my way home from work and thought I would call my friend Rosi(E) Beachy(E). Some time ago, I had started to place an E at the end of her first name. I guess subconsciously I thought she had a great anchor woman name. "And now back to the newsroom, with Rosi(eee) Beachy(eee). Rosi(eee), what's the update on our late breaking news flash?" This is a friend that gave me a birthday that reads, "Happy Birthday to someone who's just the right amount of weirdness for me." I always tell my kids that when somebody calls you weird take it as a compliment, even when that wasn't the intention. Ya saying that Rosi gets to see and hear my "weird" from time to time is an understatement.

She had moved to the east coast a while back, taking a sales position with our employer. With her new position she was spending more time traveling in her car, a car equipped with XM radio tuned into "Oprah Radio". We'd give each other our best Maya Angelou and Dr. Robin voiced advise during our phone conversations. The chances that I would catch her in her car was high.

As far as transparency goes, I'm pretty see through. You know, the kind of revealing that is mysterious. I could use a negligee analogy, but that would be weird. Yah I know, go with it. There's a time to reveal just enough and a time to reveal it all. Listen and you will know when and with whom to reveal.

"Happy Birthday to someone who's just the right amount of weirdness for me." Rosi brings out a side in me that I love, but many times question. Why question it? That's weird in an irrational kind of way. As I started to discover my B*a*g I had to make a commitment to being a better friend, which required me to share me with my friends. There were friends that embraced "me" even when it seemed a bit outrageous. There were friends that would just knod and smile. They didn't really get it and that's fine too. Rosi gave me that birthday card at the beginning of my re-birthing process. She probably doesn't even know the magnitude of her gift. She said to me that I was "ok".

Rounding the corner out of the dead zone. I better call Rosi before I forget. 70's on 7 was blasting from the radio. "Gee I hope I get her voicemail." It's 6 o'clock her time and she's probably enjoying diner with her family. It's important to have family time and not answer the phone. Glen Campbell is blasting....

I've been walkin' these streets so long
Singin' the same old song
I know every crack in these dirty sidewalks of Broadway
Where hustle's the name of the game
And nice guys get washed away like the snow and the rain
There's been a load of compromisin'
On the road to my horizon
But I'm gonna be where the lights are shinin' on me

Like a rhinestone cowboy
Riding out on a horse in a star-spangled rodeo
Like a rhinestone cowboy
Getting cards and letters from people I don't even know
And offers comin' over the phone

The next day on the way to her next sales calls, Rosi gets my voicemail. The Dancing B*a*g Lady had left her another weird voicemail. It put a smile on her face and spring in her step. Ever time I hear that song I think of Rosi and am inclined to leave her a musical voicemail.

Pave the streets of your success with friends who accept and embrace YOU. There will be less compromising on the roads to your horizons. I LOVE YOU Rosi(eee) Beachy(eee). You're one BIG rhinestone in my hat.

A Standard of Excellence - "Its a Good Thing"

Having worked 22 years for a successful, corporate manufacturing company, I know a little bit about standards. There are two things you can do with a set of standards; put them in a binder and stick them on a shelf OR live them.

The fact that I am standing in front of door at Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia isn't extraordinary. I mean it's pretty cool, but honestly hundreds upon thousands of people have passed this door, right? Its just a door with a logo or...... maybe not.

Here's a very short story on how I came upon this door with a "logo". There once was a woman who had a list. She checked everything off the list. She was rendered exhausted and unfulfilled. She went to the doctor. The doctor said she needed to lose the baby apartment. Surgery led to an off ramp from the "American" dream. The busy mom, wife, career woman thought she would start her own business. She worked her ass off and learned a whole bunch of new stuff. She was meeting new people. She stopped doing the business to start writing a blog. A stranger left a comment on her blog. This woman connected with that stranger and started volunteering her time to her nonprofit. The founder of the nonprofit won Martha Stewart's Dreamers into Doers people choice award. Some members of the Dreamers into Doers community suggested meeting in NYC. The founder of the nonprofit suggested that if we were going to be in NYC, we should make a difference for women living in a domestic abuse shelter. The Dreamers into Doers community rallied together to gather donations of beautiful things for the women of Safe Horizons. Dreamers into Doers gather with the women living at the shelter and share lunch, stories and their hearts. A cooking demonstration preceded the luncheon. A live taping of the Martha Stewart Show and tour of her media company proceeded the luncheon.

The door. The logo. Martha Stewart is a woman, a brand, but more importantly Martha Stewart stands for excellence. Excellence doesn't happen by accident. My Martha Stewart experience reminds me about the difference between putting standards into a binder and living it. Every person we interacted with at Martha Stewart Living OmniMedia knew their mission and the standard. They did their jobs well and with conviction.

Martha Stewart is Martha Stewart. She is a woman with standards. If you want to work for Martha Stewart Living OmniMedia, I suspect you go into the job knowing the the objectives and expectations. Take them or leave them. When you expect the best and get the best.

Listen very carefully. Do what you love. Do it very well. Make your expectations and standards of excellence known. If you are so inclined expand your passion requiring you to hire the best, who are passionate about what they do and have them do it with you. Quality first. Quantity second. You don't have to build an empire. Just start by filling in these blanks. I will make the very best _____. I will be the very best _____.
Learn more about how I came to be at Martha Stewart Living OmniMedia by watching the video of my speech I gave during the luncheon. Learn more about the Dreamers into Doers Community facilitated by MSLO. Meet all the Dreams into Doers who attended the two day event.
A standard of excellence. It's a good thing.

More Scavenger Hunt than Map ~ Hunting Precious Metals

The next time you are in bed and can't sleep because you have ideas and dreams dancing in your head, there is only one thing to do. Get out of bed, find every magazine in the house and start flipping through the pages. Pull out words and pictures that resonate with ideas and dreams in your head. Go to bed. The next day prepare to arrange your pictures and words onto a foam core poster board. I recommend this type of poster board because it is rigid and will stand up better.

January 2009 I got out of bed at 3 am and made the vision board pictured above, which proclaims, "From OC to NYC." I am going to NYC next week to speak at a special celebration for women who live at Safe Horizon Shelter, which is being hosted by Martha Stewart Living Omni Media. Many women have come together to make this happen. Much more is planned for the 2 day event and I will share more with you after I return.

Last week I was invited to contribute to The Survivor Manual website. It is supported by Angela Shelton and the Angela Shelton Foundation. Angela Shelton lives in California. I will be supporting the empowerment of survivors of sexual and domestic abuse to live joyful lives.

Since the January 2009 vision board creation, I have made one trip to Chicago and two trips to Detroit. I will be in NYC next week, Kansas City is on the itinerary for March and Asheville in October. When I dreamt of a Traveling Sanctuary my heart knew it meant I would be expanding my territory, as I constantly had dreams about boarding planes.

Attending church this Sunday, I asked for a sign that I was on the right path and God said, "OK" and gave me a loving slap on the face. The service was titled "Celebrate Recovery". Here is one song meant just for me entitled, Sanctuary. Lord prepare me to be a sanctuary, pure and holy, tried and true. With thanks giving I will be a living sanctuary for You.

One is not driven by their purpose, one is led by their purpose. It's like you have a magnet in your heart and as you face different directions, people and places, you will feel a tug as you face your own precious metals. Trust the tug. Let it lead you, like my nose leads me to cooking bacon.

Fuel Your Believe Act Go Traveling Sanctuary

When you create a sanctuary within your heart you can take it with you everywhere. When you travel with the intention of sharing that sanctuary with others, they find the sanctuaries within their hearts. Traveling Sanctuaries(tm) create physical sanctuaries, which fuels the Traveling Sanctuaries(tm). Many times when others observe you're being a Traveling Sanctuary(tm) they think to themselves, "I'm having what she's having." And so goes the glorious cycle. Kind of like the chicken and the egg. If you think about it too hard you get confused. Don't think. Do!

Here's a visual example of what can happen when you fuel your Believe Act Go Traveling Sanctuary and share.

Love you sister! Thank you for sharing your fuel.

A Wrong Left Turn Leads to Detroit

January 17, 2009 I stood in front of approximately 15 women and proclaimed, "I am pretty sure there is a trip in my future involving a truck and a Uhaul trailer traveling to Detroit MI." I knew it to be a true statement, as I had become accustom to this knowing feeling months prior, a peaceful certainly without knowing the steps in between the proclamation and the actual arrival.

Two years before the proclamation I had a hysterectomy and two years leading up to the surgery I basically felt like crap, which is how any working mother is suppose to feel right? I wasn't a very happy person and was exhausted ALL THE TIME. Funny thing about your body, it usually keeps sending you the signals until you either pay attention or die. I finally went to the doctor, which led to the hysterectomy, which led to me driving 665 miles to Detroit MI nearly 3 years later.

What I didn't know during those 6 weeks at home on medical leave was that there was a woman in Detroit at the very same time preparing to set out on a journey of self discovery, not dissimilar to my own. She was born to enchant the world with her decorating. As a result of searching during my medical leave, I decided to stage homes as a way to venture out of my corporate job on the way to discovering my purpose. Hey, each leg of your journey has to start somewhere.

Well along the way my journey as a home stager I took a left turn. Yah, I'm sure it was a left not a right turn. I had started to write, which eventually turned into a blog. Hey, I had stuff to share with myself. Well, 4 months into my public writing career that woman in Detroit commented on my blog. The date was October 15, 2008, which is a new kind of anniversary for me. I went to her world on the web and I had that knowing feeling. My logical brain had to first make the connection with her decorating to my home staging, which I had left along side the road by this time. It had served it's purpose, or so I had thought. My brain thought this women in Detroit, who transformed women's shelters into places of peace and possibility, needed my home decor items that I no longer needed. WRONG! Oh how a wrong can be so right.

The wonders of technology failed on my first attempt to email her, but a few months later I saw her comment on another blog. BINGO! I successfully emailed her and a few hours later we were talking on the phone and a few weeks after that I was standing in front of 15 women telling them that I would be driving to Detroit pulling a Uhaul trailer. At the time I thought I would be hauling my home decor items. WRONG! What I did transport to MI, just a few weeks ago, was 20 hope chests and jewelry boxes, handmade by my father, and 20 quilts handmade by women in Minnesota. These items joined many other handmade items from across the world to transform the bedrooms of 20 abused and neglects girls.

Stuffed inside the short little story I just wrote is a story of me unearthing my born belief that I was put here on this earth to be the Dancing B*a*g Lady, Born to be fuel my own and other's Traveling Sanctuaries. I stop at other Traveling Sanctuaries, to fuel myself, so I can share the fuel with others stranded along side the road. What I have learned is that when you take a wrong left turn on the way to Detroit you better have a full tank.

The Terrain of Your Brain - Wow! It's a Trip. Map it!

A simple question led to the fascinating exploration of my mind, the exploration of the terrain of my brain. I asked, "How do you start writing a book?" I was watching Angela Shelton's live stream and she opened it up to questions. Since she is a fabulously talented writer and is funny in the most dorky kind of way, who better to ask, right?

Here was her suggestion, "Read, The Mind Map Book, How to use Radiant Thinking to Maximize Your Brain's Untapped Potential, by Tony Buzan." I ordered it that very day and started to read it the very day it arrived at my door step. Now.... I am accustom to constructing Value Stream Maps as a tool used to conduct business process improvement projects, but often felt bond by a "linear" focus. As you know, any successful business person has a very dominate left brain. Which is a borrowed belief I picked up early in my career. It left me feeling a bit lop-brain sided, stunted and out of balance. Now I am not saying that anybody forced me to buy into this. I limited myself mostly to fit in and to be accepted within a world I shared with some very capable, talented business people.

The book explains how the brain works and ultimately provides you with a mapping tool that allows you to tap into your left and right brain. No more pigeon holing your brain, left or right. HELLO TO MY WHOLE BRAIN. YOUR ARE SOOO CAPABLE AND VAST AND UNIQUE AND COLORFUL AND WELL....... TAKE A LOOK.

You see those two bridges. Guess what? Your left brain can talk to and visit your right brain. Which means they can collaborate and cooperate. Think about your bridges. Have they been out of service because somebody (yourself) has told you that you are left or right brain dominate? Time to open the bridge.
Below is the first exercise in the book, which demonstrates the power of association and how different people are based on their own unique experiences. The first one is mine and the second is my seven year old son's. The central theme is "HAPPINESS". The branches from the ten words are infinate, as well, and so is the power of your brain.
My associations: skip, joy, laugh, cry, warm, silly, smile, friends, family, go lucky
Gavin's associations: joy, play, friends, good grades, no school, parties, tv, building, sports, earning toys

I'll be sharing more about this book as I start using this tool more. There is a book inside me where Chaos and Rules can travel together. I will also use this tool to solve problems, brain storm ideas and plan my work.

Catholic Laundromats

Doing laundry this weekend got me thinking about confessionals. You know, Catholic Laundromats*.

I quit frequenting confessionals long before I started getting my laundry good and dirty. "Forgive me father for I have sinned. My last confession was??? Um??? 30 years ago. You better turn on the light and settle in, I've got quite the laundry list. Heck let's get nostalgic and review my last list, but first, forgive me for waiting so long between confesses. I'm told, that in itself, is a sin.

OK here we go....

1. Forgive me for whacking my sister over the head with that green "O-Cedar" broom. I must have hit her pretty hard. I felt really bad when I saw the blood. I immediately was sorry, but I am not sure if I told her so. "O-Cedar makes sisterhood life easier."

2. Forgive me for taking that apple from the refrigerator when Mom said I couldn't eat anything before supper. I was so ashamed I hid under the bed and ate it. I think I know how Adam and Eve must have felt. Dang, The Garden of Eden is that much further out of reach.

3, Forgive me for peeking at my Christmas presents, but Norman Claus kind of has a nice ring to it.

4. Forgive me for punching LuLu Schinberger. We don't have all day so let's just say she was trying to defend her friend Hank, who was getting fresh with me, as fresh as a grade school boy could get. I warned Hank, "If you touch me I'm going to punch you." Its probably wrong, but I was pretty proud of that black eye. I was defending myself. My first real feeling of feminist power, I believe. Power to a girl who can defend herself. I feel pretty lucky I haven't had to defend myself in that way, after that incident.

OK now for the good and dirty laundry. Let's pull out my lists from 1982 to 1999's. Hmm.... let me think about this. I never have stunk up the confessional with this stuff, so what's the point now? For God sakes, I didn't feel guilty about most of those so called sins. I mean, what's a good sin without the guilt to go with it. This sinning thing is a little confusing. There must be categories. I'm thinking I should only bring the category "5's" in here. I always wondered if serious criminals actually went to confession. I'm still wondering.

Hey I know when I've sinned. I've had guilt. I've forgiven (myself). I've asked for forgiveness. I've sincerely apologized. You know we have options when it comes to airing our dirty laundry.

Next time I'm doing laundry here's what I'm going to do.

1. Hold up suspect pieces of clothing in my own daylight.

2. Check for unsightly stains.

3. Apply SPRAY AND PRAY.

4. Wash

5. Dry

6. Wear

7. Repeat if necessary.

8. Stubborn stains may be worn in public or semi-public settings, as long as they belong to you. That's a personal choice.

* No priests were harmed in this blog post. Many have undoubtedly helped others while behind the "curtain". It just really wasn't my thing.

Dont' Deny Yourself of YOUR Fuel

A Dancing BAG Lady just isn't herself without fueling up on some great music. Why would I deny myself of fuel that I know I need. It puts a spring in my step and song in my heart. I feel as if I could conquer all my fears, a female likeness of a young John Travolta.

I carry my Ipod in my Traveling Sanctuary bag. Won't leave home without it, yet lately I haven't been listening. I think to myself how listening to a few songs would do me good and yet I don't do it. Finally today I turned on the tunes. My heart and spirit lifted. AHHHHH!

Its one thing to have a full tank and another to put a spark to that fuel.

I've concluded that I just wanted to wallow in some self pity. Not a good place to be for an extended amount of time. Thank goodness I kept my music with me, so when I finally pushed my ego aside I could make a speedy escape.

Multitasking- Yah Right!

Ever watch a movie and read a book at the same time? Well of course NOT!!!! We shouldn't be paying the bills, making supper, folding clothes AND listening to our family all at the same time either because it CAN NOT, I repeat CAN NOT be done. Traveling Sanctuaries need to stop for fuel. Stop and tune into what's going on around you.
Multitasking??? Yah Right and I've got a device I can sell you that allows your brain to independently think about multiple things at the same time. Quality trumps quantity every time.

I Haven't Stripped In a While

Ok I am checking my math, but um..... yes I think I am correct. I graduated high school 23 years ago this last May. Reconnecting with your high school classmates through Facebook can make one drift back a bit, especially when there are many you haven't seen since that day.
The labels we put upon ourselves and others seem frozen in time. You go about your new life. Some go to college, others marry. We may have pasted new labels over the old only to resurface again perhaps. You lose track.
I reminisce of times when the only label we knew was "friend"! Without the labels we hunted frogs, ate cheerios with chocolate chips, had our own spaghetti eating contests (without utensils), learned to dance in the basement, circled together and cheered before games, had sleep overs on the tramp and in the camper.
Sure we had our spats and immature actions, but "friend" screams louder.
As I age, I find it necessary to strip myself and others of labels and return to my frog hunting, spaghetti eating, dancing, cheering FRIEND. Its a label that covers in all the right places and flatters all figures.

My Best Advice on Giving Advice

Here's the best advice I can give about giving advice, "When you have the urge to give advice, stop and just listen."

Did you hear me? Ok , now I'm listening.

Dare to Dream a Dream So So BIG

I close my eyes and what do I see? Yellow, red, blue and green. Mostly old- not new. I go to this place to do what some would call work, but we will call it something different. Women "play" here and get paid to do so. We will play hard. We will sweat and toil. We will cry and we will laugh. Our pay comes in many forms, giving and getting. Looks more like a home than a place of "business".

Lunch time.......I can smell it now. Fresh bread, fruit and maybe a treat. We will eat together.

Back to creating things for sale for our happy customers whom we inspire and help. Actually we are our own happy customers. Creating is our own therapy. We together have created a place we want to go and do our deeds.

I believe to the deepest core of my heart this is a true story, as dreams are real as real can be. The beating so loud it drowns out my fear.
I thank Dear Daisy Cottage for bringing an eye to my heart.
